Organizers' Sustainability Commitment
The 2009 World Conference on Sport and the Environment (WCSE) Greening Initiative is a framework of management practices and procedures that guide the planning of the event and ensure that decisions related to the event are made according to sound principles of environmental, social and economic sustainability. The objectives of this initiative are to:
- Reduce the consumption of resources and the generation of wastes and pollution;
- Ensure the environmental impacts associated with the services and products procured for the 2009 WCSE are minimized and opportunities for promoting positive social and economic development are maximized to the greatest extent possible; and,
- Actively engage all involved with the 2009 WCSE through promotions and communications in contributing to overall event sustainability.
To achieve these objectives, the 2009 WCSE Greening Initiative is structured to ensure that our internal operations, marketing and purchasing are conducted in accordance with best practices in sustainable development. A core component of the 2009 WCSE Greening Initiative includes the 2009 WCSE Sustainable Procurement Strategy.
The 2009 WCSE Sustainable Procurement Strategy
Sustainable procurement means making environmentally, socially and economically conscious choices when purchasing products or services. A sustainable procurement strategy has been established for the 2009 WCSE and has been employed throughout the acquisition of products and services related to the event. This in turn helps to develop markets for environmentally and socially responsible products and is contributing to positive social and economic development.
